If you share my love of travel, you're certainly aware of how many different types of trips exist out there. If you love history, it's easy to plan a vacation that gives a glimpse into the past. Do you enjoy exploring the great outdoors? You can strap on your boots, pack the car, and set out for a weekend hike to just about every corner of the Grand Canyon! Even those who claim to love a "quiet beach vacation" can easily add a few heart-pumping adventures on the water to their trip. With so many options, it's easy to get caught up in the idea that every trip has to be an adventure. On the contrary, some of the best trips are the ones that help us unwind and rejuvenate. From the soothing shores of coastal beach destinations to peaceful retreats nestled in nature, these destinations provide the perfect backdrop for letting go of stress and embracing a slower pace of life. Here are some of the most relaxing vacation destinations in the US, where you can find some inner peace while also creating lasting memories filled with calm and joy.

North East

Dating back to 1866, The Cliff House is not only one of the most relaxing places in Maine but it’s also one of the most historic. The resort sits on 70 acres of gorgeous waterfront land with a view that might just be the most relaxing in the state. Each of the 266 rooms have private terraces, too. While a visit comes with a price tag that make it best for a special occasion, the amenities you’ll find here are worth every penny. In addition to relaxing views, there are three restaurants and a cafe. Enjoy the great outdoors by lazing by one of the two pools, or take a break from relaxing to visit the nearby towns of Kennebunkport or Ogunquit.

Hudson County, located about two hours from New York City, boasts plenty of gorgeous small towns. Filled with independently owned businesses, the region is known as a refuge for those looking to relax. While there are many to choose from, Rhinebeck is known as one of the best. With views of the Catskill Mountains and plenty of ways to unwind, it’s one of the most relaxing vacation vel destinations in the US. And, in addition to beauty it’s also filled with great dining, performing arts and even nearby hiking. Plan on spending the weekend at the Beeman Arms, a historic local hotel that predates the Revolutionary War. This is a great base for local exploring, as well as taking a hike in the 200-acre beauty of Ferncliff Forest. After that, head back to town to rejuvenate yourself with a massive burger at The Matchbox Cafe.

New Hampshire’s Lakes Regions is beloved for its four-season scenic views and quaint towns. Each spot offers things to see, places to visit and lots of history to take in. While you truly can’t go wrong visiting any of the towns along the shores of the lake, Sunapee is known as one of the best. The shoreline of the lake is more than 70 miles with an impressive 11 islands located within the waters. While you’ll find plenty of ways to relax with a stay in town, we love the idea of heading off on the scenic Sunapee Loop Scenic Byway. The journey is about 140 miles and travels through towns such as Greenfield, Hillsborough, Goshen, Springfield, and Henniker. Be sure to allow extra time to stop at the covered bridges and historic spots, like the Pierce Homestead.

South East

4. Hamburg State Park, Mitchell, Georgia

There are more than 60 state parks in Georgia, which means you have plenty of options if you love exploring the outdoors. While each one offers ways to take in some fresh air, one of the most relaxing is Hamburg State Park. While the 741-acre park is located a bit off-the-beaten path, it’s worth the mileage to get there. A visit means taking in history, nature and even some (relaxing!) adventures. The park has 32 camping sites for tents, trailers, and RVs. Best of all, many can be found along Hamburg Lake. As anyone who loves fishing knows, there are few things more serene than time spent on the water. Luckily, Hamburg State Park is known for its access to largemouth bass, bream, and crappie. When you visit, factor in enough time to stroll through the paths surrounded by trees as well as a stop at the park’s museum and restored gristmill.

5. Tavernier, Monroe County, Florida

Each region of the Sunshine State comes with its own vibe. The palm trees in places like Miami feel completely different than the Spanish moss in towns like Gainesville in the North. Being born here, I love it all. But, I’ll always have a special place in my heart for the Florida Keys. And, in particular, the Upper Keys. Tavernier is a tiny town located between Key Largo and Islamorada. It’s so small, it’s often overlooked as a place to just grab some groceries. But, if you stick around it’s one of the most laid back spots in the region. For ultimate fun and relaxation you can rent a house here as a jumping off point to spots like John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park. This spot is renowned for its diving and snorkeling opportunities. As one of the most popular recreation options in the area, things are likely to be busy here. Another, perhaps quieter option, is Windley Key Fossil Reef Geological State Park in neighboring Islamorada.

Midwest

6. Hocking Hills State Park, Logan, Ohio

Renowned as one of the most beautiful places in Ohio, Hocking Hills State Park in southeastern Ohio is truly a sight to behold. It’s without a doubt one of the most relaxing vacation destinations in the US. That is, as long as you consider access to nature and fun hikes to be relaxing. The park has 25 miles of hiking trails along with interesting rock formations, caves and gorgeous waterfalls. Trails here range in length from short ones that are great for beginners to longer routes meant to be enjoyed over time. One of the best is Old Man's Cave Trail which leads directly to Upper Old Man’s Cave Falls and its 20-food cascade. The view is iconic and if you’re familiar with the area, there’s a good chance you’ve already seen a photo. If not, be sure to bring a camera to capture the beauty for yourself.

7. Chalet, Fennville, Michigan

There are lots of reasons to visit Fennville, but the one we love most is the chance to stay at the most incredible a-frame vacation rental! Located within close proximity to everything the area has to offer, including wineries, restaurants, and farms, this rental has it all. For those who are looking for a staycation away from home, there are plenty of modern amenities to enjoy inside. There’s strong WiFi as well as a fully-equipped 55” TV. The kitchen is also modern and ready for you to make meals at home any time you’d like. And, of course, it doesn’t get more relaxing than the hot tub on the deck with views through the trees. If you’d like to explore the area, be sure to check out Salt of the Earth, a local farm-to-table restaurant. In keeping with that same theme you might also like Waypost Brewing Co., which is a farm-to-glass brewery. No matter how you choose to chill, this is a great place to do it.

8. Medicine Park, Comanche County, Oklahoma

One of the most walkable towns in Oklahoma, Medicine Park offers the opportunity to explore without stress. Located at the base of the Wichita Mountains, the town offers beautiful views with lots to see. In its early days it was a popular tourist destination before falling into disarray after the early 1900s. It was brought back to life through a restoration project and today it’s a great place to visit. Most of the spots to see sit right near Medicine Creek, which means some lovely water views as well. Make your way to Cobblestone Row in the center of town which is filled with local shops and restaurants. Once you’ve enjoyed town, head to Bath Lake Swimming Hole to cool down.

South West

9. The Little Nell, Aspen, Colorado

It’s easy to say that Colorado is one of the most relaxing vacation destinations in the US, but is it true? We’d say so! No matter what you enjoy, there’s a way to feel calmer in Colorado. If the exhilaration of winter sports cools your nerves, you’ll find it here! Prefer river tubing? The state has that, too. But, for the ultimate in cool, consider splurging on this gorgeous resort in Aspen. The Little Nell is a ski-in/ski-out spot that’s perfect for skiers. But, if you prefer to stick around the resort there’s plenty to enjoy including the gas fireplaces in each room or the soaking tubs. The rooftop features an adults-only swimming pool with 360-degree views of the landscape. Summer visitors will appreciate the access to hiking, fly-fishing and other adventures. For an especially unique day out, visit Devil’s Punchbowl swimming hole, which is hidden off Independence Pass.

10. Riverside Hot Springs Private Retreat, Truth or Consequences, New Mexico

The landscape of New Mexico is unlike any other, which makes it a natural choice for your next trip. To make it great, consider a stay at this relaxing vacation destination along the banks of the Rio Grande. The Riverside Hot Springs Private Retreat offers both water and mountain views, making it an easy place to simply sit and watch the world go by. The rental has three bedrooms and two bathrooms with room for four guests. We especially love the solarium offering space for mediation, yoga or even just taking in the views. When you’re ready for some adventure, make your way to the heart of Truth or Consequences to try the many hot springs and other outdoor recreation opportunities.

North West

11. Oceanside, Oregon

If there’s any region in the country that can be considered “chill” it’s most certainly the Pacific Northwest. And, this little hamlet is a great example. Oceanside is a hidden gem located about 10 miles west of Tillamook. With state parks and rock on all sides, it’s easy to see why life here is quiet and undisturbed. Home to just 500 people, Oceanside might just be the perfect beach town. When you visit, be sure to enjoy time at Oceanside Beach Recreation Site, but be prepared for some chilly water! From the beach you’ll be able to see Three Arch Rocks which make for a lovely photo. You can also see some epic views during a visit to nearby Cape Mears, which is right on the Three Capes Scenic Loop near Oceanside. And, of course, no visit to the area is complete without a trip for ice cream at Tillamook Creamery. No matter what you do here, you’re sure to do it with ease and joy.

12. Orca Island Cabins, Seward, Alaska

While Alaska isn’t really a spot found in the North West, we were compelled to have it round out our list of the most relaxing vacation destinations in the US. How could we ignore an adults-only island with cabins situated right on the edge of the water? Welcome to Orca Island Cabins outside of Seward! Located on Resurrection Bay, this might just be the most idyllic option on this list. The island destination is only accessible by seaplane or boat which means things here feel secluded and quiet. Each cabin has everything you’ll need for your visit, including a fully equipped kitchen. The real highlight here is the fun you can have. Surrounded by nature, visitors can enjoy kayaking, fishing, or paddleboarding. You might also consider adding a whale watch trip out of Seward to the start or end of your vacation. But, of course, simply sitting on the private deck to enjoy the views might be even better.
